Qatar Holds Funeral for Ismail Haniyeh: Middle East Tensions Rise

Qatar will hold a funeral ceremony for Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh on Friday, August 2. Haniyeh will be buried at Lusail Cemetery, north of Doha, following funeral prayers at Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque. The funeral will be attended by Arab and Islamic leaders, as well as representatives from various Palestinian factions and the general public.

Haniyeh's body arrived in Doha on the afternoon of Thursday, August 1, having been flown from Tehran, Iran. At Doha airport, the body was received by Hamas senior figure Khaled Mashal and other officials. Haniyeh was killed in an attack at his residence in Tehran early on Wednesday, July 31, due to a bomb explosion. A bodyguard of Haniyeh also died in the attack. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

In response to the attack, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike on Israel, stating that the act would be met with severe punishment. Khamenei emphasized that Iran is obligated to avenge Haniyeh’s martyrdom on Iranian soil.

Additionally, Iran has called upon all its allies in the Middle East to discuss retaliatory actions against Israel. This meeting will include representatives from Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, and Palestine and will be held in Tehran.

In recent developments, Iran's Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has arrived in Qatar to attend Haniyeh's funeral. Aref left Tehran on Friday morning to participate in the funeral procession (Tasnim News) (Palestine Chronicle).
